Abstract

Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh perkembangan komunikasi digital yang mendorong pengguna platform digital untuk mengandalkan emoji sebagai pengganti komunikasi nonverbal dalam interaksi online. Maka dari itu penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi sejauh mana penggunaan emoji berperan dalam komunikasi digital saat berkomunikasi di platform discord. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam (indepth interview). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa emoji telah menjadi bagian yang tidak terpisahkan dari komunikasi digital para pengguna discord baik dalam bentuk emoji standar maupun emoji kustom yang tersedia di server tertentu. Emoji berfungsi sebagai pelengkap ekspresi emosional dalam pesan teks untuk menghindari kesalahpahaman yang sering terjadi akibat keterbatasan komunikasi berbasis teks. Namun demikian, pertukaran makna emoji tidak selalu menghasilkan pemahaman yang sama antara pengirim dan penerima karena dipengaruhi oleh faktor-faktor seperti konteks percakapan, topik pembicaraan, dan tingkat kedekatan antar individu. Penelitian ini juga menemukan adanya pergeseran makna emoji di kalangan pengguna di mana sejumlah emoji telah berkembang maknanya mengikuti budaya internet, seperti emoji menangis yang kini lebih sering digunakan untuk mengekspresikan tawa berlebihan serta emoji tengkorak yang digunakan untuk situasi mengejutkan atau sesuatu yang dianggap keren. Selain itu, emoji bendera juga digunakan sebagai media untuk menyuarakan nilai dan keyakinan. Emoji standar maupun emoji custom dapat digunakan sebagai bentuk respon cepat melalui fitur reaksi dalam discord. Penggunaan discord sendiri mencerminkan kedua tipe CMC, yaitu synchronous CMC melalui fitur voice channel dan video call serta asynchronous CMC melalui fitur chat teks dan penggunaan emoji. Kata kunci: Computer Mediated Communication, Discord, Ekspresi Emosional, Emoji, Komunikasi digital / This study is motivated by the evolution of digital communication, which has prompted users of digital platforms to rely on emojis as a substitute for nonverbal cues during online interactions. Consequently, this research aims to explore the extent to which emojis play a role in digital communication on the Discord platform. A qualitative research method was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that emojis have become an integral part of digital communication for Discord users, encompassing both standard emojis and custom emojis specific to certain servers. Emojis serve to complement emotional expression within text messages, helping to prevent misunderstandings that frequently arise from the limitations of text-based communication. However, the exchange of emoji meanings does not always result in a shared understanding between the sender and the receiver, as it is influenced by factors such as conversational context, the topic of discussion, and the level of interpersonal closeness. The study also identifies a shift in emoji meanings among users; certain emojis have evolved in significance in line with internet culture—for instance, the "crying" emoji is now frequently used to express uproarious laughter, while the "skull" emoji is employed in shocking situations or to denote something considered "cool." Additionally, flag emojis are used as a medium to express values and beliefs. Emojis standard and custom emojis can serve as a means of rapid response via Discord's reaction feature. Discord usage itself reflects both types of Computer�Mediated Communication (CMC): synchronous CMC through voice channels and video calls, and asynchronous CMC through text chat and emoji usage.
