Abstract

Integrating Nicholas Cull's framework of public diplomacy with Jean Baudrillard's theory of simulation, this research reveals how popular culture media creates a hyperreality of diplomacy that functions as an instrument of ideological hegemony. Using a qualitative approach with Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis method, this study examines 14 episodes of the series to understand narrative construction, discursive strategies, and the mechanisms of creating legitimacy for U.S. global leadership. The findings show that the series operates in four stages of simulation: the construction of an ideal narrative that portrays American diplomats as moral actors; the naturalization of hegemony through the universalization of American values; the creation of a hyperreality that transcends actual diplomatic practices; and the legitimization of foreign policy through convincing simulacra. The series does not merely represent diplomacy, but actively shapes global perceptions of the United States' role in contemporary geopolitics, particularly in the context of rivalry with China and the repositioning of leadership after the Cold War. This research contributes to the theoretical understanding of digital diplomacy and the influence of media on the formation of the international order in the era of global information, while also providing a critical perspective on the practice of public diplomacy through the entertainment industry.
