Abstract

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan penggambaran stereotip pria farang dan wanita Thailand dalam novel Private Dancer (2005), yang ditulis oleh Stephen Leather, seorang penulis cerita menegangkan dari Inggris yang membuat cerita dengan tema kehidupan prostitusi di Thailand. Selain itu, tulisan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan bagaimana prostitusi digambarkan dalam cerita berdasarkan masing-masing karakter, juga pengaruh seks, kekuasaan, dan uang pada hubungan antara pria farang dan wanita Thailand, dan juga pesan yang dapat diambil dari analisis penulis dalam novel. Novel ini menceritakan tentang kisah cinta dalam prostitusi yang dialami oleh tokoh utama bernama Joy dari Thailand dan Pete dari Inggris. Pete sempat berharap kisah cintanya dengan gembira akan seperti dongeng atau bahagia selamanya, namun ternyata menjadi kisah cinta mimpi buruk. Akibatnya, Pete merasa dikhianati dan ternyata membunuh Joy sebagai kekasihnya dan dengan rasa penyesalan ia pun bunuh diri atas penyesalannya. Penulis saat ini menggunakan teori stereotip gender dan hubungan kekuasaan. Metode yang digunakan dalam tulisan ini adalah metode kualitatif. Pada akhirnya, penulis saat ini memberikan beberapa data yang sesuai dengan apa yang terjadi dalam novel untuk membuktikan bahwa stereotip dapat diubah berdasarkan pikiran dan tindakan yang benar dan tidak membuat uang dan seks menjadi kekuatan atas suatu hubungan. / This paper aims to show the stereotypical portrayal of farang men and Thai women in the novel Private Dancer (2005), written by Stephen Leather, a British thriller writer who made a story with the theme of Thailand. In addition, this paper aims to provide how the prostitution is depicted in the story based on each character, also the influence of sex, power, and money on the relationship between farang men and Thai women, and also the message that can be taken from the writer’s analysis in the novel. This novel tells about the love story in prostitution that experienced by the main characters named Joy from Thailand and Pete from UK. Pete had expectation about his love story with joy will be like a fairy tale or happily ever after, but it turns out being nightmare love story. As a result, Pete feels sense of betrayal and turns out to kills Joy as his lover and with a sense of regret he also commits suicide over regret things he did. The present writer uses the theories of gender stereotype and power relations. The method used in this paper is a qualitative method. In the end, the present writer provides some data that is in accordance with what happens in the novel to prove that the stereotype can be changed based on the right thoughts and actions and does not make money and sex the power over a relationship.
