Abstract
This research was conducted to analyze the types of pronouns that are difficult for first year students of SMPNegeri 229 Jakarta and to find out why the students face difficulties in learning English pronouns. The English pronouns that were discussed are personal pronoun, object pronoun, possessive adjective, posessive pronoun, andreflexive or emphatic pronoun. The research took place at SMPNegeri 229 Jakarta Barat. All the students from class VII-6 that consists of 36 students were research participants. The writer used Descriptive Statistic Technique in this research. In collecting data the writer gave test and questionnaire as the instrument. According to the result of data analysis, the first year students of SMPNegeri 229 Jakarta faced some difficulties in learning English pronouns. The result showed that the most difficult pronouns for the students is possessive pronoun with 65.56%. After that is subject pronoun with 42.78%, object pronoun with 34.44%, reflexive or emphatic pronoun with 33.33%, and the last is possessive adjective with 18.33%. Moreover there were some causes of students’ difficulties in learning English pronouns. First it is because the students do not master well in function and form of each pronouns. Second, there are internal and external factor influenced students’ difficulty in learning English pronouns. The internal factors were students do not have interest in learning English and the students do not focus when teaching learning process. Then, the external factor is a lack of teacher’s explanation
