Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai budaya yang tercermin dalam istilah budaya material Jawa dan mengidentifikasi strategi yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkannya ke dalam bahasa Inggris dalam cerita pendek anak The Riddle in the Recipe (2022) karya Muliasih Tary. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitan adalah qualitative. Data diperoleh langsung dari cerita pendek tersebut dan dianalisis menggunakan dua kerangka kerja utama: teori Orientasi Nilai (Value Orientations) milik Kluckhohn dan Strodtbeck (1961) serta strategi penerjemahan milik Eirlys E. Davies (2003). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya 13 istilah budaya material Jawa yang mencerminkan tiga orientasi nilai. Pertama, Relational Orientation, khususnya collaterality yang menekankan pentingnya ikatan sosial dan hubungan kemasyarakatan. Kedua, Man-Nature Orientation, khususnya harmony with nature terkait pemanfaatan sumber daya alam secara bijak. Ketiga, Activity Orientation, khususnya being-in-becoming yang menyoroti proses persiapan yang teliti dan berdedikasi. Untuk menyampaikan nilai-nilai tersebut, penelitian ini mengidentifikasi bahwa penerjemah mengadaptasi 4 strategi penerjemahan. Strategi addition sangat berhasil mempertahankan makna melalui deskripsi penjelas, sedangkan strategi preservation secara efektif menjaga keaslian budaya dan meminimalkan hilangnya makna filosofis yang mendalam. Sebaliknya, strategi globalization menunjukkan keterbatasan tertentu karena penggunaan istilah yang terlalu universal membuat nilai-nilai budaya Jawa yang spesifik menjadi bias. Sementara itu, kombinasi preservation and globalization berhasil menyeimbangkan antara mempertahankan identitas lokal dan membantu pembaca internasional memvisualisasikan objek tersebut. Secara keseluruhan, studi ini menunjukkan bagaimana pilihan strategi penerjemahan memengaruhi penyampaian nilai-nilai budaya lokal dan pemahaman objek budaya bagi pembaca sasaran. Kata kunci: Jawa, Nilai Budaya, Istilah Budaya, Strategi Penerjemahan / This qualitative research aims to describe the value orientation reflected in Javanese material cultural terms and to identify the strategies used in translating them into English within the children's short story The Riddle in the Recipe (2022) by Muliasih Tary. The data were obtained directly from the short story and analyzed using two main frameworks: Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s (1961) Value Orientations theory and Eirlys E. Davies’ (2003) translation strategies. The findings reveal 13 Javanese material cultural terms reflecting three value orientations. First, Relational Orientation, especially collaterality which emphasizes the importance of social bonds and communal relationships. Second, Man-Nature Orientation, especially harmony with nature regarding respectful resource utilization. Third, Activity Orientation, especially being-in-becoming highlighting meticulous and dedicated preparation processes. To transfer these values, the study identifies that the translator adapted 4 translation strategies. The addition strategy successfully maintains meanings through explanatory descriptions, while the preservation strategy effectively maintains cultural authenticity and minimizes the loss of deep philosophical meanings. Conversely, the globalization strategy shows a certain limitation because using highly universal terms makes specific Javanese value orientation become biased. Meanwhile, the combination of preservation and globalization strikes a good balance between maintaining local identity and helping international readers visualize the items. Overall, this study demonstrates how the choice of translation strategies affects the conveying of local value orientation and the target readers' understanding of cultural objects.
