Abstract

Studi ini, Love-Hate Relationship: Mother-Daughter Conflict in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), menganalisis hubungan kompleks antara protagonis dan antagonis dalam film tersebut. Film ini menggambarkan seorang ibu imigran Tiongkok yang pindah ke Amerika dengan harapan memperoleh kehidupan yang lebih baik, tetapi justru mengalami penyesalan mendalam atas keputusannya. Di tengah pergumulannya, ia bertemu dengan makhluk dari Multiverse yang ternyata adalah xi putrinya sendiri. Konflik di antara mereka berkembang dalam skala Multiverse, yang berasal dari konflik internal dan eksternal yang telah dialami sang ibu sepanjang hidupnya. Meskipun sering terjadi perselisihan, kasih sayangnya terhadap sang putri tetap tidak berubah. Studi ini menganalisis karakter, konflik, dan unsur sinematik intrinsik dalam film untuk mendekonstruksi dinamika hubungan ibu dan anak. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, terlepas dari rasa sakit dan kebencian yang mungkin dialami seorang ibu, ia tetap mencintai dan menerima putrinya meskipun memiliki kekurangan. Selain itu, studi ini mengungkap bahwa diaspora budaya, konflik antar generasi, serta perbedaan nilai menjadi faktor utama yang menyebabkan ketegangan dalam hubungan ibu dan anak sepanjang film.Kata Kunci: Ibu, Anak perempuan, Konflik, Multiverse / This study, Love-Hate Relationship: Mother-Daughter Conflict in Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), examines the complex relationship between the film’s protagonist and antagonist. The film portrays a Chinese immigrant mother who moves to America in search of a better life, only to experience deep regrets about her decisions. Amidst her struggles, she encounters a Multiverse being who is, in fact, her own daughter. The conflict between them escalates on a Multiverse scale, stemming from both internal and external struggles that the mother has faced throughout her life. Despite their persistent clashes, her love for her daughter remains unwavering. This study analyzes the film’s characters, conflicts, and intrinsic cinematic elements to deconstruct the mother-daughter dynamic. The findings indicate that, regardless of the pain and resentment a mother may experience, she continues to love and accept her daughter despite her perceived flaws. Furthermore, the study reveals that cultural diaspora, generational conflict, and differing values are the underlying causes of the tension that shapes their relationship throughout the film.
