Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation strategies used to translate personifications and to identify the types of personification found in Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. This study employs a qualitative method using the Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) approach. The data sources consist of the English source text and its Indonesian translation. The data were collected through observation by identifying and classifying personifications in both texts. The types of personification were identified using the classification proposed by Braak (2007), while the translation strategies were analyzed based on the framework proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995). The findings reveal a total of 17 personification data. Two types of personification were identified, consisting of Animating an Object or an Abstract Thing (15 data) and Concrete or Vivid Personification (2 data). The dominance of Animating an Object or an Abstract Thing indicates that Hemingway more frequently attributes human qualities to natural elements, animals, body parts, and inanimate objects while preserving their original identities rather than portraying them as fully human figures. Four translation strategies were also identified, consisting of Literal Translation (14 data), Adaptation (1 data), Transposition (1 data), and Modulation (1 data). The findings show that Literal Translation is the most dominant strategy because the translator generally preserves the original meaning, structure, and figurative expressions of the source text, allowing the literary effect of the personifications to be maintained in the Indonesian translation. Overall, the findings demonstrate that the translator successfully preserves both the figurative meaning and the literary quality of the original novella while producing a translation that is natural and understandable for Indonesian readers. Keywords : personification, translation strategies, types of personification, literary translation, The Old Man and the Sea. / Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan personifikasi serta mengidentifikasi tipetipe personifikasi yang terdapat dalam novel The Old Man and the Sea karya Ernest Hemingway. Dua tipe personifikasi berhasil diidentifikasi, yaitu Animating an Object or an Abstract Thing (15 data) dan Concrete or Vivid Personification (2 data). Kata Kunci : personifikasi, strategi penerjemahan, jenis personifikasi, penerjemahan sastra, The Old Man and the Sea.
