Dengan demikian, Musik berperan penting dalam pembentukan identitas sosial dan Generasi Z di tengah arus globalisasi dan perkembangan media digital/Music serves as a form of communication medium, capable of conveying messages through lyrics from the singer to the audience. This phenomenon has heightened Gen Z interest in classic Western pop songs, making it a compelling subject for research—particularly within the context of local band festivals in Jakarta, where these classic tracks are frequently performed and reinterpreted. This study aims to understand how Gen Z interprets classic Western pop songs covered by local bands and to identify the factors influencing this process of meaning-making within the context of musical communication.. This study uses a qualitative approach with an interpretative method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six Gen Z informants aged (18-28 years) who were spectators at a local band festival in Jakarta, and supported by documentation and recordings of musical performances. Data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, as well as drawing conclusions and verification, the theoretical framework used is the theory of audience reception by Stuart Hall. The results of this study indicate that Gen Z plays an active role in interpreting the lyrics of old western pop songs. The resulting interpretation is not singular but diverse, in the position of dominant, negotiating, and oppositional meanings. This music festival performance not only brings old western pop songs as nostalgia but also reinterprets them as representations of values relevant to Gen Z's life such as personal emotions, social relations, the search for identity and freedom of expression. This study concludes that local band festivals serve as a space for communication, enabling a negotiation of meaning between Western music and the social context of Generation Z in Indonesia. Thus, music plays a crucial role in shaping social identity and the identity of Generation Z amidst the currents of globalization and the evolution of digital media.
