Abstract

This study aims to examine how Generation Z women interpret and understand dating violence within romantic relationships. Dating violence remains a significant issue among young women, yet many forms of violence are often not recognized as harmful behaviors. This research employed a qualitative approach using a transcendental phenomenological method. The participants consisted of seven Generation Z women who had experienced violence in dating relationships. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Corbin and Strauss coding technique. The findings reveal that Generation Z women generally perceive dating relationships as being based on love, commitment, communication, and emotional security. However, some participants still interpret possessive behavior, excessive control, and jealousy as expressions of care and affection. The study identified six major themes: the meaning of dating relationships, relationship boundaries, experiences of dating violence, reasons for remaining in abusive relationships, violence that is not always perceived as violence, and violence as a form of control, manipulation, and ownership. Furthermore, victims tend to remain in abusive relationships due to love, hope for change, emotional dependency, and fear of losing their partners. From the perspective of Symbolic Interactionism, meanings associated with dating violence are constructed through social interactions and the interpretation of symbols within relationships. The findings indicate that the normalization of possessive and controlling behaviors may prevent victims from recognizing violence in its early stages. Therefore, greater education about healthy relationships and awareness of various forms of dating violence is essential for Generation Z women. Keywords: Generation Z, dating violence, symbolic interactionism, meaning-making, women.
