Abstract

Before the Coffee Gets Cold. / This study discusses magical realism in the novel Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi. The aim of this study is to identify the characteristics of magical realism and to explain the significance of its use as depicted in the novel. The method applied is descriptive qualitative, presenting dialogues and narratives relevant to the topic. The results reveal five characteristics of magical realism in the novel: 1) the irreducible elements of magic, 2) the phenomenal world, 3) unsettling doubts, 4) merging realms, and 5) the disruption of time. The study also finds that the portrayal of time travel and the presence of ghosts carry significant meaning in the use of magical realism—as a reflection on life itself, and as a reminder of the value of time and the importance of cherishing seemingly ordinary moments.
