Abstract

This research departs from the phenomenon of the growth of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, which initially emerged as a response to racial injustice and structural violence in the United States, but subsequently underwent an expansion in meaning and reach that transcended national borders. The emergence of the film Black Panther as a product of popular culture with international distribution and significant box office success occupies a strategic position in elevating the representation of Black identity, racial justice, and global solidarity through narratives and symbols of a universal character. Therefore, the scope of this study is focused on analyzing the relationship between popular cultural diplomacy through the film Black Panther and the process by which the BLM movement has expanded as a global idea. This research aims to explain how the BLM movement crossed national boundaries under the influence of popular cultural diplomacy through the film. The theoretical framework of this study rests on semiotic analysis to understand the meanings of symbols and narratives in the film, as well as the concepts of Transnational Advocacy Networks (TANs) and Digital Activism, which explain the mechanisms for disseminating ideas and fostering cross-border solidarity. This study also employs a qualitative research method with a case study design and a descriptive-analytical type. Data were obtained through unstructured interviews and an analysis of the film Black Panther as a site where sociocultural meanings are produced, supported by a literature review drawing from books to news articles. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing to ensure the validity and depth of interpretation. As a finding, this research reveals an alignment between the values of BLM and the meanings embedded in the film Black Panther. Coupled with Black Panther’s global success, it helps broaden the dissemination of moral values aligned with BLM principles, thereby contributing to the transformation of BLM from a local idea into a global one. This research is expected to offer a conceptual contribution to understanding the role of popular culture as a non-traditional instrument of diplomacy in advancing cross-border social activism.
