Abstract

This research aims to analyze the translation techniques used in rendering humorous elements from the American teen sitcom Victorious into Indonesian subtitles. The main focus of this study is to identify how different types of humor—such as wordplay, situational comedy, and sarcasm—are effectively transferred from the source language into the target language. Translating humor presents not only linguistic challenges but also cultural ones, as humor is deeply rooted in social context, cultural references, and expressions that may not have direct equivalents in the target language. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive method, using Molina and Albir’s (2002) framework of translation techniques as its analytical foundation. A total of 86 humorous utterances were collected from Season 1 of Victorious and were analyzed to determine the type of humor and the technique used to translate it. The findings reveal that the most frequently applied techniques was literal translation because there were so many sarcasm that found in the series without changing the structure and translation of the subtitles. While some humorous effects were successfully retained in the Indonesian subtitles, other cases resulted in partial or complete loss of humor due to linguistic limitations or cultural gaps. These results highlight the importance of creativity and cultural sensitivity when dealing with humor in audiovisual media. The study also emphasizes that the choice of translation technique plays a crucial role in preserving the intended comedic impact. This research contributes to the field of audiovisual translation, particularly in subtitling, and offers practical insights for translators, scholars, and media professionals aiming to convey humor across languages and cultures more effectively.
