Abstract
Abstrak Mahasiswa papua yang menempuh studi di perguruan tinggi luar daerah kerap mengalami hambatan dalam proses komunikasi, baik secara budaya maupun teknologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap bentuk bentuk hambatan komunikasi yang dihadapi mahasiswa papua di universitas tama jagakarsa, serta bagaimana mereka menavigasi tantangan dalam ranah komunikasi digital yang menjadi bagian penting dari aktivitas akademik saat ini. Menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode studi kasus, data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap enam informan mahasiswa asal papua. Analisis data dilakukan dengan teknik reduksi, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan, serta diuji keabsahannya melalui triangulasi sumber. Fokus penelitian berada pada pengalaman langsung mahasiswa terkait kendala komunikasi antarbudaya dan penggunaan media digital dalam konteks perkuliahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa hambatan komunikasi muncul dari perbedaan gaya bicara, logat, persepsi budaya, serta ketidaknyamanan dalam berinteraksi dengan mahasiswa dari latar belakang berbeda. Hambatan ini diperparah oleh keterbatasan penguasaan terhadap platform komunikasi digital seperti google classroom, email akademik, dan aplikasi konferensi video, terutama pada masa transisi dari pembelajaran tatap muka ke daring. Namun demikian, mahasiswa menunjukkan berbagai bentuk adaptasi, seperti belajar teknologi secara mandiri, membentuk jaringan dukungan sesama mahasiswa papua, dan memanfaatkan komunitas kedaerahan sebagai ruang aman untuk berkomunikasi. Temuan ini memperkuat pendekatan konstruktivisme sosial, yang menekankan pentingnya pengalaman dan interaksi dalam membentuk pemahaman dan penyesuaian diri dalam konteks lintas budaya. Kata Kunci: Hambatan Komunikasi, Komunikasi Digital dan Mahasiswa Papua, / Abstract Papuan students studying at universities outside the region often experience barriers in the communication process, both culturally and technologically. This study aims to reveal the forms of communication barriers faced by Papuan students at Tama Jagakarsa University, as well as how they navigate challenges in the realm of digital communication which is an important part of academic activities today. Using a qualitative approach with a case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews with six Papuan student informants. Data analysis was carried out using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques, and its validity was tested through source triangulation. The focus of the study was on students' direct experiences related to obstacles to intercultural communication and the use of digital media in the context of lectures. The results showed that communication barriers arose from differences in speaking style, accent, cultural perception, and discomfort in interacting with students from different backgrounds. These barriers were exacerbated by limited mastery of digital communication platforms such as Google Classroom, academic email, and video conferencing applications, especially during the transition from face-to-face to online learning. However, students showed various forms of adaptation, such as learning technology independently, forming support networks with fellow Papuan students, and utilizing regional communities as safe spaces for communication. These findings reinforce the social constructivism approach, which emphasizes the importance of experience and interaction in shaping understanding and adaptation in cross-cultural contexts.
