Abstract

Kata kunci: Bawang putih, Staphylococcus aureus, Antibakteri, disc diffusion Garlic (Allium sativum L.) has been used as an medicinal plant to treat various diseases, one of them is antibacterial. Garlic is containing several compounds, such as allicins, flavonoids, essential oils, and ajoene which have an antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the germs that play a role in causing acne vulgaris. This study was conducted to determine the effect of garlic extract (Allium sativum L.) to Staphylococcus aureus growth. In this study, 3 kg garlic was extracted using ethanol pro analysis, and producing viscously oil extract. Garlic extract with various concentrations 10%, 20%, 40%, 80%, and 100% were tested on Mueller-Hinton Agar by using disc diffusion method to determine antibacterial activity to Staphylococcus aureus growth. Ciproxin and sterile aquades were used as positive and negative controls, respectively. This study showed garlic extract has inhibitory effect to Staphylococcus aureus growth. The greater concentration of the extract produces stronger inhibition on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. Results were compared using Kruskall – Wallis method and showed a significant difference between each concentration with positive controls. Key words: Garlic, Staphylococcus aureus, antibacteria, disc diffusion
