Abstract

Various studies have shown that using short stories in language teaching is very advantageous because it provides authentic material, cultural enrichment, language advancement, and personal growth. Among the various literary genres, short stories is one of the most appropriate to use in language classroom. This study was conducted to investigate the perception of students to develop vocabulary. Employed a mixed methods research design, quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 30 sixth grade students at Global Sevilla Primary School Jakarta. The quantitative data was collected using a questionnaire, and the qualitative data was gathered through interviews. The data obtained were descriptively analyzed by means of SPSS and Excel. The results showed that the students’ perception towards the use of short story was positive. For them, short stories were interesting materials to use to develop vocabulary. Based on findings, short stories are recommended to use to develop students’ vocabulary. Keywords: Perception, Vocabulary Learning, Short Stories Berbagai penelitian telah menunjukkan bahwa menggunakan cerita pendek dalam pengajaran bahasa sangat menguntungkan karena memberikan bahan otentik, pengayaan budaya, kemajuan bahasa, dan pertumbuhan pribadi. Di antara berbagai genre sastra, cerita pendek adalah salah satu yang paling tepat untuk digunakan di kelas bahasa. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menyelidiki persepsi siswa untuk mengembangkan kosa kata. Dengan menggunakan desain penelitian metode campuran, data kuantitatif dan kualitatif dikumpulkan dari 30 siswa kelas enam di Global Sevilla Primary School Jakarta. Data kuantitatif dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner, dan data kualitatif dikumpulkan melalui wawancara. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan SPSS dan Excel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan cerpen adalah positif. Bagi mereka, cerita pendek adalah bahan yang menarik untuk digunakan untuk mengembangkan kosa kata. Berdasarkan temuan, cerita pendek direkomendasikan untuk digunakan untuk mengembangkan kosa kata siswa. Kata kunci : Persepsi, Mempelajari Kosakata, Cerita Pendek
