Abstract

They were taught speaking using short stories to see the effect of that technique. To obtain the data, pre-test and post-test were administered. The data obtained were analyzed using the descriptive statistic and parametric statistic analysis technique through SPSS version 22.00 program. The result of this research was that short stories had significant effect on the eighth graders’ speaking skill. It can be seen from the mean scores of pre-test and post-test of both group, which were, 38,50 and 39,23 for the control group and 39.00 and 44.40 for the experimental group. Based on the result of hypothesis test using the paired sample t-test, it was found that sig (2-tailed) (.000) was greater than Sig. α (0.05). The findings indicated that H0 was accepted and Hα was not accepted. The conclusion of this research was Short story had significant effect on the eighth graders’ speaking skill. Based on the descriptions above, it is recommended for use short story to improve students' speaking skill. Keywords: Experimental research, Short story, speaking skill
