Abstract

This study examines how Russian resistance to Western cultural hegemony impacts international students at Irkutsk National Research Technical University (INRTU). This resistance is not only reflected through state policies and symbolic transformations in public spaces such as rebranding Western products and restricting the use of English—but also present in the daily dynamics of international students living in different social systems. Pierre Bourdieu's Symbolic Power Theory is used to examine how capital and habitus interact in the arena in shaping the social position of international students amidst new power configurations. The genealogical approach method is used to trace the discursive practices and power relations that construct their experiences. This research is qualitative with a case study approach, using data from interviews, observations, and documentation that are analyzed. The results show that international students face challenges in two main areas: socio-cultural adaptation outside and inside campuses which are marked by limited access to Western symbols, and academic life dominated by local norms with minimal room for negotiation. This condition places international students in a liminal position, not fully accepted, but also unable to reject the existing social field. Thus, Russia's resistance to the West reproduces symbolic power that is not only structural, but also felt in everyday social relations.
