Abstract
This study was conducted to determine whether intraocular pressure (IOP) and systemic comorbidities hypertension or diabetes mellitus affect the visual quality of post-phacoemulsification cataract patients. Surgical techniques have been shown to be more effective in treating cataracts and improving vision compared to other surgical techniques. Increased intraocular pressure and in particular the presence of systemic comorbidities hypertension and diabetes mellitus have previously been known to play a role in the visual quality outcomes of cataract patients after phacoemulsification surgery. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between IOP, hypertension, or diabetes mellitus with visual acuity in senile cataract patients after phacoemulsification at the UKI hospital during the period 2019-2020. Data collection was taken in the form of medical records of patients at the UKI hospital for the period 2019-2020 using the purposive sampling research sampling technique with a total sample of 122 samples. The data taken were the patient's age (>50 years), the patient's gender, IOP and visual acuity before phacoemulsification surgery, IOP and visual acuity of 1 day after phacoemulsification surgery, visual acuity of 1 month and 3 months after phacoemulsification surgery, and the presence of systemic comorbidities hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The results of the Kruskal Wallis statistical test in this study obtained a P value > 0.05 on the relationship between IOP with visual acuity before phacoemulsification, 1 day, 1 month, and 3 months after phacoemulsification surgery. The results of the Chi-square statistical test in this study obtained a P value < 0.05 on the relationship between systemic comorbidity with visual acuity 1 month after phacoemulsification and diabetes mellitus with visual acuity 1 day and 1 month after phacoemulsification. These results show that there is no relationship between IOP and visual acuity in senile cataract patients post-phacoemulsification and there is a relationship between diabetes mellitus and visual acuity in senile cataract patients post-phacoemulsification.
