Abstract

Etlingera elatior (Jack) R. M. Smith is a plant in Indonesia which used by Indonesia ethnic as medicine, spices, vegetable, and ornamental. Utilization of E. elatior. as a medicine and a spice more prominent than other uses. This article aims to explain the uses, phytochemicals, and biological activitie of E. elatior. This paper is based on literature offline and online media. Off line literatures based on handbooks, dissertations and thesis. Web, Scopus, Pubmed, Journal, and other online media to supplement used in this article. Etlingera elatior by local communities in Indonesia, vegetables, condiments, cincang, seasoning arsik, and terites. The food with added to E. elatior has a distinctive aroma and -more durable. The E. elatior as medicine use to cure fever, cough, ear infections, wound, anti-hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and traditional sauna materials. Bioactivities of E elatior have antihypertensive, antioxidant, antimicrobial, skin whitening and anti aging. Utilization of E. elatior as a medicine and spices related to secondary metabolites content. Essential oil or essential oils are compounds that are founded in E. elatior esspecially mono and sesquiterpenoids, which have properties that produce volatile odours.
