Abstract

Tympanic membrane perforation (TM) is a common case in otology. Perforations most commonly occur as a result of either otitis media or trauma, usually presenting clinically with chronic infection and conductive hearing loss. Patients who suffer from perforation of TM require reconstruction of TM with myringoplasty technique. Myringoplasty is the standard invasive procedure to close perforations in TM. An autoglossal graft including the temporalis fascia, cartilage, and perichondrium is usually used for standard myringoplasty. However, conventional myringoplasty, using parchment paper, is also a procedure to close the TM perforation with a minimally invasive procedure. Purpose: This case aims to report the success of conventional myringoplasty using parchment paper or what is known as paper patch myringoplasty performed on a 23-yearold woman with tympanic membrane perforation. Case Report: A 23-year-old woman, with perforation of the tympanic membrane auris right. The patient underwent a conventional myringoplasty using parchment paper at the ENT Clinic of UKI Hospital. After five weeks postoperatively, the patient's main complaints were reduced, hearing improved, and based on ear endoscopy, it was found that the tympanic membrane tissue had begun to close, and parchment paper as a medium for reepithelialization as a tissue bridge for healing the tympanic membrane tissue. Conclusion: Conventional myringoplasty using parchment paper is an alternative to close the perforation of the tympanic membrane, is minimally invasive, and can be monitored during outpatient treatment. Keywords: Tympanic membrane perforation, parchment paper, conventional myringoplasty, paper patch myringoplasty.
