Abstract

The discrimination that occurs in Indian women is evidence of gender inequality. One form of discrimination resulting from gender inequality is violence against women. Various cases of violence against women occurring in India ultimately illustrate that the government is not paying attention to women's issues, especially cases of domestic violence. The inability of the Indian State in handling various cases of violence prompted the Indian government to ratify the CEDAW. CEDAW is an international standard instrument adopted by the United Nations in 1979 and came into force on 3 December 1981. CEDAW is one of international law that serves to assist the State of India in empowering and protecting women from violence. In analyzing cases of violence in Indian households, the author uses the theory of feminism, the concept of the CEDAW convention, and the concept of culture.
