Abstract

Background: Hallucinations are sensory perception disorders that cause individuals to hear, see, smell, feel, or taste something without any real external stimulus. Auditory hallucinations are the most common type of hallucination experienced by patients with mental disorders and may cause fear, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and impaired daily functioning. Based on medical record data from Duren Sawit Mental Hospital, East Jakarta, from January to March 2026, there were 597 cases of sensory perception disturbances involving hallucinations (100%). One non-pharmacological intervention that can help patients control hallucinations is storytelling distraction therapy. Objective: To evaluate the implementation of storytelling distraction therapy in reducing the intensity of auditory hallucinations in patients with sensory perception disturbances. Methods: This study employed a descriptive case study design involving two patients, Mrs. M and Mrs. N, who were diagnosed with sensory perception disturbance: auditory hallucinations. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and the implementation of storytelling distraction therapy conducted 10 times. Results: A reduction in the signs and symptoms of hallucinations was observed in both patients. Mrs. M's observation score decreased from 6 to 0, while Mrs. N's score decreased from 5 to 2. The patients also appeared more active in communication and were better able to divert their attention from hallucinatory stimuli. Conclusion: Storytelling distraction therapy was effective in reducing the intensity of auditory hallucinations and improving patients' ability to control hallucinations. Keywords: Storytelling distraction, auditory hallucinations, sensory perception disturbance, psychiatric nursing.
