Abstract

This Undergraduate Thesis entitled an Analysis on the Translation Techniques and Equivalence of Idioms Used in the Subtitle of the Movie Joker. It is at finding types of idioms, describing the Techniques used by the translator in the subtitle translation of Joker movie and the translations’ equivalences. The study is a qualitative analysis. The data of this study were analyzed by using three steps. First, identifying the type of idiom contained in each data. Second, analyze what translation Techniques are used by translators. Third, analyze the equivalence of the translation results by comparing the source text and the target text. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the idiom type theory by O’Dell and McCharty (2017), translation Techniques theory by Molina and Albir (2002), and Equivalence theory by Newmark (1981) and Nida and Taber (1974). There are 20 data collected by researcher. the researcher found 3 data using the reduction Techniques, 1 data using the Discursive Creation Techniques, 6 data using the Established Equivalent Techniques, 3 data using the Linguistic Compression Techniques, 2 data using the Modulation Techniques, 2 data using the Transposition Techniques, 1 data using the Adaptation, and 2 data using Literal Translation as a translation Techniques. For the types of idioms, there are 17 data representing Fixed Statement idioms, 2 data being Proverbs idioms, and 1 data being Cliche idioms. For the translation equivalence, from a total of 20 data, there are 3 unnatural data, and the rest, which means 17 data have natural translation results. Keywords: translations Techniques, idioms, equivalence / Skripsi ini berjudul an Analysis on the Translation Techniques and Equivalence of Idioms Used in the Subtitle of the Movie Joker. Skripsi ini menemukan jenis idiom, menggambarkan teknik yang digunakan oleh penerjemah dalam terjemahan subtitle film Joker dan padanan terjemahannya. Jenis penelitian ini adalah analisis kualitatif. Data penelitian ini dianalisis dengan menggunakan tiga langkah. Pertama, mengidentifikasi jenis idiom yang terkandung dalam setiap data. Kedua, menganalisis teknik penerjemahan apa yang digunakan oleh penerjemah. Ketiga, menganalisis kesepadanan hasil terjemahan dengan membandingkan teks sumber dan teks sasaran. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan teori tipe idiom oleh O’Dell dan McCharty (2017), teori teknik penerjemahan oleh Molina dan Albir (2002), dan teori kesetaraan oleh Newmark (1981) dan Nida dan Taber (1974). Ada 20 data yang dikumpulkan oleh peneliti. Peneliti menemukan 3 data menggunakan teknik Reduksi, 1 data menggunakan teknik Kreasi Diskursif, 6 data menggunakan teknik Ekuivalen Mapan, 3 data menggunakan teknik Kompresi Linguistik, 2 data menggunakan teknik Modulasi, 2 data menggunakan teknik Transposisi, 1 data menggunakan Adaptasi, dan 2 data menggunakan Terjemahan Literal sebagai teknik penerjemahan. Untuk jenis idiom, terdapat 17 data yang mewakili idiom Fixed Statement, 2 data merupakan idiom Provervb, dan 1 data merupakan idiom Cliche. Untuk kesepadanan terjemahan, dari total 20 data, terdapat 3 data kurang ekuivalen, dan sisanya, yang berarti 17 data memiliki hasil terjemahan ekuivalen.
