Abstract
The objective of this research is to analyze the correlation between students’ reading ability and vocabulary mastery. In this research, the writer used quantitative method by Pearson correlation product moment. There are two variables in this research. Students Reading ability as independent variable (variable X) and vocabulary as dependent variable (variable Y), the technique of collecting data was by using test. The test consists of 50 items of reading comprehension and 50 items of vocabulary. The object of study is 40 students from class XI Science 1 and 2 at the second grade students of SMA Hutama, Bekasi in the academic 2012/2013. From the calculation by using product moment formula, it was found out that the mean of the scores of the students’ achievement in reading comprehension test is 76.05. The mean of the score of the students’ of the vocabulary test is 68.65. The result of applying the rxy (ro) distribution shows that the coefficient correlation is 0.53. The degree of significance 5% is 0.320 and the degree of significance 1% is 0.413. It means ro is higher than rt (0.53>0.320) and (0.53>0.413). So, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The conclusion of this research is there is a significant correlation between reading ability and vocabulary mastery towards students’ achievement. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menganalisis hubungan antara pemahaman membaca dan penguasaan kosakata siswa. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan teknik korelasi Product Moment. Dalam penelitian ini ada dua variable, pemahaman membaca sebagai independent variable (variable X) dan penguasaan kosakata sebagai dependent variable (variable Y), teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan tes, tes yang terdiri dari 50 soal untuk reading comprehension tes dan 50 soal untuk vocabulary tes. Obyek penelitian adalah 40 siswa kelas XI-IPA 1 dan IPA 2 SMA Hutama, Bekasi, tahun ajaran 2012/2013 Dari perhitungan dengan menggunakan rumus Product Moment, ditemukan bahwa mean dari nilai reading comprehension adalah 76.05 dan vocabulary adalah 68.65. Hasil dari distribusi menggunakan rxy(ro) menunjukan bahwa koefisien korelasi adalah 0.53. Tarif signifikansi 5% adalah 0.320 dan taraf signifikansi 1% adalah 0.413. itu berarti ro lebih tinggi daripada rt (0.53 > 0.320) dan (0.53 > 0.413). Jadi, alternatif hipotesis (Ha) diterima dan null hipotesis (Ho) ditolak. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini yaitu terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca dan penguasaan kosakata terhadap tingkat prestasi siswa.
