Abstract

The research specific objective of this research were to find out the significant effect of using Talking Chips technique and also to investigate the students’ interest in the use of Talking Chips technique in EFL class. This research was a classroom an experiment research method design, which was decided in to two groups; experimental class and control class. The data were quantitative. The quantitative data were collected through pre-test and post-test. The subject of this research was the eleventh graders of XI MIA 1 and XI MIA 2 consisting of 61 participants from SMA Angkasa 1, Jakarta conducted on April 21-May 21, 2018. The result indicated that there was an improvement of students’ scores in the pre-test to post-test. The mean score of students’ pre-test of experimental class was 61.48 in post-test 64.90 in post-test. The mean score of students’ pre-test of control class was 61.10 in post-test 62.90 in post-test. It was supported by observation, showed that there was students’ interest of the implementation of Talking Chips. Based on the result, it was concluded that through implementation of The Effect of Using Talking Chips technique in Eleventh Graders’ Speaking Development could improve. The researcher suggested that English teachers can use this technique in discussion to encourage students to be active in speaking English and to increase students’ confidence. Keywords: Talking Chips, Speaking Skills, and Speaking Development Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan berbicara Bahasa Inggris siswa-siswi menggunakan teknik Talking Chips, serta untuk mengetahui apakah siswa-siswi tertarik terhadap penggunaan teknik Talking Chips pada pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian eksperimen yang dilaksanakan dalam 2 kelompok. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah data kuantitatif. Data kuantitatif diperoleh melalui pre-test dan post-test. Subyek dalam penelitian ini adalah kelas XI MIA I dan XI MIA 2 yang terdiri dari 61 partisipan dari SMA Angkasa 1 Jakarta yang dilaksanakan pada tanggal 21 April-21 Mei 2018. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan pada tes siswa-siswi mulai dari pre-test sampai post-test. Nilai rata-rata pada pre-test siswa-siswi kelas experimental adalah 61.48 pada post-test 64.90. Nilai rata-rata pada pre-test siswasiswi kelas control adalah 61.10 pada post-test 62.90. Hal ini didukung oleh hasil observasi, yang menunjukkan bahwa terdapat minat siswa-siswi terhadap penerapan teknik Talking Chips. Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh, dapat disimpulkan bahwa melalui penggunaan teknik Talking Chips, kemampuan berbicara siswa-siswi meningkat. Peneliti menyarankan agar guru Bahasa Inggris menggunakan teknik ini dalam diskusi untuk mendorong siswa-siswi menjadi aktif berbicara bahasa Inggris dan untuk meningkatkan kepercayaan diri siswa-siswi.
