Abstract

Plasmodium resistance to antimalarial drugs is the ability of the parasite to survive and multiply despite treatment with antimalarial drugs at doses normally used or at a higher dose that can be tolerated by the patient. Antimalarial drug resistance is caused by spontaneous mutations in the malaria parasite. Mutations can occur at a single point mutation, but also can occur multiple mutations. Mutations are influenced by various factors related to the drug, the parasite Plasmodium and humans as hosts.
