Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of tuberculosis (TB) cases in Indonesia has reach more than 700 thousand cases, the majority of them are pulmonary TB. Lung tissue damage in pulmonary TB patients facilitates the growth of Aspergillus sp. that may lead to chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA) with symptoms similar to pulmonary TB. Research objectives: The study aims to determine the type of fungus isolated from the airways of pulmonary TB patients. In addition, data was collected on other laboratories, including complete peripheral blood and the presence of anti-Aspergillus antibodies. Methods: The isolation of the fungus was conducted through sputum culture using the high-volume culture (HVC) method. The serological examination is conducted to detect anti-Aspergillus antibodies. Result: Among the 12 patients involved in the study, a comprehensive examination was conducted on seven of them. Candida sp., Aspergillus sp., and Penicillium sp. were isolated among seven patients. None of the seven patients had positive serological test result. Conclusion: The majority of sputum samples obtained from pulmonary TB patients showed the presence of isolatable fungi (4/7). Based on detection of anti-Aspergillus antibodies, it can be concluded that no CPA was found in patients studied.
