Abstract

Banyak pembelajar pemula yang baru mengenal bahasa asing, sebagian besar bingung dalam mengucapkan kata-kata dalam bahasa asing tersebut dikarenakan perbedaan kosakata dan pengucapan kosakata bahasa asing tersebut berbeda dengan bahasa ibu atau bahasa nasional para pembelajar. Peneliti ini menggunakan merupakan penelitian pustaka (library research). Data penelitian ini diambil dari daftar kosakata yang salah diucapkan oleh mahasiswa pada saat sedang menjelaskan atau menyampaikan secara lisan tugas mata kuliah ‘Speaking’ di depan kelas. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan ketidak-konsistenan beberapa huruf hidup (consonant letter) dalam bahasa Inggris. Secara umum, perbedaan bunyi huruf konsonan dibagi menjadi dua, yaitu huruf konsonan bergema (voiced consonant sound) dan huruf konsonan tidak bergema (voiceless consonant sound). Dari data yang di dapatkan, penulis juga menemukan ketidakkonsistenan beberapa huruf konsonan termasuk gabungan dua huruf konsonan. Jenis huruf konsonan yang bunyinya tidak konsisten, yang ditemukan di dalam data penelitian ini, adalah huruf c, g, dan y, sedangkan gabungan dua huruf konsonan yang yang tidak konsisten bunyinya adalah huruf sh, ch, dan th. Penulis berharap agar hasil penelitian ini dapat berguna bagi siapapun yang ingin mempelajari tentang bunyi bahasa Inggris khususnya bunyi huruf-huruf yang memiliki bunyi yang tidak menetap (inconsistent) khususnya ketidak-konsistenan bunyi dari huruf-huruf konsonan bahasa Inggris. Kata kunci: huruf konsonan, pelafalan bahasa Inggris, kosakata, ketidak-konsistenan bunyi. / Many English learners are still confused about pronouncing some English words due the to different sounds between English and their mother language. The English pronunciation is very different from their mother tongue or their national language. In this research, the researcher uses library research. The data of this research was taken from a list of English words that were incorrectly pronounced by college students when delivering materialfront frnt of the class using English. This study reveals that tare here many kinds of inconsintencies of some English consonant letters. In general, the consonant sound is divided into two parts, namely the voiced consonant sound and the voiceless consonant sound. From the data gained, the researcher foundtypeseral type of inconsistencies that several consonant letters have including the sounds resulted by a combination of two consonant letters. The inconsistency types of the consonant letters’ sounds are 1) the inconsistency sound of letter c, 2) the inconsistency sound of letter g, 3) the inconsistency sound of letter y, and 4) the inconsistency sound of combination of two consonant letters namely consonant sh, ch, and th. The author hopes that the results of this research can be useful for anyone who wants to learn about the the different sounds that an English consonant letter has. This research result can be also used by any English learners to develop their English-speaking skills. Keywords: English Pronunciation, Vocabulary Groups, College Student.
