Abstract

This research is an ethnomathematic study which explores the traditional carving of the Batak people called Gorga. The research was conducted through direct observation and interviews with Gorga carvers. Observations are made on the entire process of making the carvings in order to find the mathematical concepts used. Data analysis was carried out by connecting the local wisdom used by the carver in making gorga with academic mathematical concepts. The results showed the existence of the concept of arithmetic sequences in the traditional way used by carvers in making Gorga carvings. Keywords: Arithmetic sequences, carving, ethnomathematics, mathematical concept.
