Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui proses masuknya budaya populer Korea Selatan di Meksiko dan terutama keberhasilan idol K-Pop Super Junior mendapatkan popularitas dalam persepsi masyarakat Meksiko. Masyarakat yang tergabung dalam fandom memiliki persepsi baik akibat kehadiran Korea Selatan dan budayanya tersebut. Secara khusus, musik pop Korea banyak menyajikan lirik dan frasa motivasi yang dipandang berbeda dengan musik Latin yang biasanya mengandung unsur kekerasan. Topik ini menarik karena Meksiko merupakan negara yang masyarakatnya akrab dengan budaya Eropa dan Amerika bukan Asia. Untuk memahami fenomena tersebut, studi ini akan menggunakan konsep budaya populer, soft power, diplomasi budaya, dan network society. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data seperti survei literatur dan wawancara. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa penyebaran budaya populer Korea Selatan dan popularitas Super Junior di Meksiko disebabkan oleh dua hal. Pertama, pemerintah Korea Selatan secara aktif melakukan diplomasi budaya melalui pendirian Korean Culture Center di Meksiko, pelaksanaan Festival, Ajang Kompetisi, World Tour. Kedua, kemajuan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi turut memperlancar arus informasi dan pengetahuan tentang budaya populer Korea Selatan sehingga meningkatkan popularitas budaya popular Korea Selatan termasuk melalui idol K-Pop Super Junior. Kata kunci: Budaya Populer, Soft Power, Diplomasi Budaya, Network Society, Idol K-Pop Super Junior/ This study aims to determine the penetration of South Korean popular culture in Mexico and especially the success of K-Pop Idol Super Junior in gaining popularity in the perception of Mexican society. People who are members of fandom have a good perception of South Korea and its culture. Especially, Korean pop music presents a lot of motivational lyrics and phrases that are seen as different from Latin music which usually contains elements of violence. This topic is interesting because Mexico is a country whose people are familiar with European and American culture, not Asia. To understand this phenomenon, this study will use the concepts of popular culture, soft power, cultural diplomacy, and network society. This study uses qualitative methods with data collection such as literature survey and interviews. This study shows that the spread of South Korean popular culture and Super Junior's popularity in Mexico is caused by two things. First, the South Korean government is actively conducting cultural diplomacy through the establishment of a Korean Culture Center in Mexico, holding Festivals, Competitions, and World Tours. Second, the advances in information and communication technology have helped to facilitate the flow of information and knowledge about South Korean popular culture, thereby increasing the popularity of South Korean popular culture, including K-Pop Idol Super Junior.
