Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the translation method used by translators in translating Zootopia film subtitles, a fictional film themed in the world of modern mammals, Zootopia. This city is a place for animals from every environment together from the largest elephant to the smallest rat. But when there is new police officer, Judy Hopps arrived in the city of Zootopia, she finds out to be the first rabbit and difficult for her in the Zootopia Police Department (ZPD) consisting of large and tough animals. This research uses the theory of translation method by Peter Newmark, and the theory of equivalence in translation by Eugene Nida and Taber. The results of this study shows the translation methods and explanations used by translators such as Communicative translation method (15 times used), Literal translation method (7 times used), Word-for-word translation method (5 times used), Semantic translation method (4 times used), Faithful translation method (2 times used), Idiomatic translation method (1 time used), and Free translation method (1 time used), as well as the equivalence in translation from the source language to the target language seen in the Zootopia film subtitles such as Formal equivalence (5 times) and Dynamic equivalence (15 times). Keywords: translation methods, equivalence in translation.
