Abstract

Sementara itu, berdasarkan alasan penggunaan campur kode, ditemukan 28 data yang termasuk kategori talking about a particular topic, 4 data being empathic about something, 1 data expressing group identity, 3 data repetition used for clarification, dan 5 data the intention of clarifying the content of speech for the interlocutor. Code mixing is a common linguistic phenomenon in bilingual and multilingual societies, particularly in entertainment media that portray young people's communication styles. As one of the most popular forms of language variation, code mixing reflects speakers’ linguistic choices and social identities in everyday interactions. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the types of code mixing used in the series and to explain their occurrence based on established sociolinguistic theories. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method. The research data consisted of utterances containing code-mixing from episodes 1 and 2 of the Gossip Girl Indonesia series. The data were collected through observation, transcription of dialogue, identification of code-mixed utterances, and data classification. The types of code mixing were analyzed using Muysken’s (2000) theory, which classifies code mixing into three categories: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The reasons for code mixing were analyzed using Hoffman’s (1991) theory. The findings revealed 41 instances of code mixing. Based on Muysken’s classification, 23 instances were categorized as insertion, 16 as alternation, and 2 as congruent lexicalization. Regarding the reasons for code mixing, 28 instances were identified as discussing a particular topic, 4 as expressing empathy, 1 as expressing group identity, 3 as repetition for clarification, and 5 as an intention to clarify the content of speech for the interlocutor. The results indicate that insertion is the most frequently used type of code mixing, while discussing a particular topic is the most common reason. These findings suggest that code mixing in the series is primarily influenced by the topic of conversation and the speakers’ intention to communicate naturally and effectively, reflecting the characters' social and cultural context. Keyword: types of code mixing, reasons for code mixing, Gossip Girl Indonesia version
