Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi metode penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh Ichwancul Fahdli dalam menerjemahkan kalimat tanya pada subti-tle bahasa Indonesia dari film The Queen’s Gambit. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori metode penerjemahan yang dikemukakan oleh Newmark (1998) sebagai kerangka analisis untuk mengkaji bagaimana kalimat tanya diterjemahkan dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran dengan tetap mempertahankan makna dan keterbacaan serta mempertimbangkan keterbatasan subtitle. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, penerjemah menggunakan delapan metode penerjemahan yang dikemukakan oleh Newmark. Metode-metode tersebut dibagi menjadi dua kategori, yaitu: (1) metode yang berorientasi pada bahasa sumber (BS), yang meliputi pen-erjemahan kata demi kata (word-for-word translation), penerjemahan harfiah (lit-eral translation), penerjemahan setia (faithful translation), dan penerjemahan se-mantis (semantic translation); serta (2) metode yang berorientasi pada bahasa sasaran (BSa), yang meliputi adaptasi (adaptation), penerjemahan bebas (free translation), penerjemahan idiomatis (idiomatic translation), dan penerjemahan komunikatif (communicative translation). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa metode penerjemahan kata demi kata dan penerjemahan harfiah merupakan metode yang paling sering digunakan dalam menerjemahkan kalimat tanya pada subtitle film tersebut. Pemilihan metode penerjemahan yang digunakan oleh pen-erjemah bervariasi sesuai dengan konteks linguistik, tujuan komunikatif, dan karak-teristik masing-masing kalimat tanya. Selain itu, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penerjemahan subtitle tidak hanya berfokus pada pengalihan makna dari satu ba-hasa ke bahasa lain, tetapi juga harus mempertimbangkan keterbatasan teknis, seperti panjang subtitle dan durasi tampil di layar. Dengan demikian, subtitle ba-hasa Indonesia film The Queen’s Gambit yang diterjemahkan oleh Ichwancul Fahdli dapat dinilai tepat, berterima, dan mudah dipahami oleh pembaca bahasa sasaran tanpa menghilangkan makna serta fungsi komunikatif kalimat tanya pada teks sumber. / This research aims to identify the translation methods employed by Ichwancul Fahdli when translating question sentences in the Indonesian subtitles of The Queen’s Gambit. The study applies Newmark’s (1998) theory of translation meth-ods as the analytical framework to examine how question sentences are translated from the source language into the target language while maintaining meaning and readability and adhering to subtitle constraints. Based on the analysis, the translator employs all eight of Newmark’s translation methods. These methods are divided into two categories: (1) source language (SL)-oriented methods, namely word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, and semantic translation; and (2) target language (TL)-oriented methods, namely adaptation, free translation, idi-omatic translation, and communicative translation. The findings indicate that word-for-word and literal translation are the most frequently used methods for translating questions in movie subtitles. The translator’s choice of translation method varies depending on the linguistic context, communicative purpose, and the characteristics of each question. Different translation methods are used to ensure that the translated subtitles remain accurate, natural, and easily understood by Indonesian audiences. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that subtitle translation involves more than transferring meaning from one language to another. Translators must also consider technical constraints, such as subtitle length and screen duration, which influence the selection of appropriate translation methods. The researcher concludes that the Indonesian subtitles of The Queen’s Gambit, translated by Ichwancul Fahdli, are appropriate, acceptable, and comprehensible for the target audience, while success-fully preserving the intended meaning and communicative function of the original question sentences.
