Abstract
Penelitian selanjutnya direkomendasikan melakukan studi komparatif dengan korporasi energi terbarukan sejenis di kawasan Teluk / The global energy transition has compelled oil-rich nations to redefine their geopolitical influence through environmentally oriented strategies. In this context, Masdar, formally known as Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, has emerged as a strategic non-state actor for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in establishing global climate leadership. This study aims to analyze the strategic environmental diplomacy narratives constructed by Masdar through its Sustainability Reports of 2015, 2019, 2021, and 2024, as well as to identify the development of those narratives as part of the company's strategy to build international legitimacy and global influence. The theoretical framework integrates Soft Power Theory by Joseph S. Nye Jr., Environmental Diplomacy Theory, and Strategic Narrative Theory by Miskimmon, O'Loughlin, and Roselle to examine how narratives of climate leadership, green finance, ESG, and transnational expansion are constructed within the company's sustainability reports. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design through documentation study of four Masdar Sustainability Reports, validated through source triangulation, and analyzed using coding methods and content analysis. The findings reveal that Masdar's sustainability reports have transformed from administrative documents into effective instruments of corporate diplomacy, consistently reinforcing five core narratives, namely climate leadership, energy transition framing, Global South energy access, strategic partnership, and sustainability identity. Through these narratives, Masdar has successfully established a credible green identity while functioning as an extension of UAE's climate diplomacy in expanding its geopolitical influence as a petro-state in the decarbonization era. Future research is recommended to conduct comparative studies with similar renewable energy corporations in the Gulf region.
