Abstract
This study examines Japan’s demographic crisis from an International Relations perspective using a Postcolonial apparoach. Japan is currently facing a demographic crisis that is projected to decline to approximately 87 million by 2070. This research focuses on analyzing how Western values interact with traditional Japanese norms, particularly within the ie system and the nationalization of women’s reproductive roles during the Meiji–Shōwa era. Rather than completely replacing traditional values, this interaction has created a condition of ambivalence that influences how Japanese women perceive marriage and reproduction. The analysis employs Homi K. Bhabha’s postcolonial theory, incorporating the concepts of ambivalence, mimicry, and hybridity as the primary analytical framework. Liberal Feminist Theory is used to complement the analysis by explaining how changes in women's social roles and gender equality influence marriage and reproductive decision-making. Study adopts a qualitative descriptive case study approach. Data were collected through interviews and document analysis, with source triangulation used to ensure data validity. The collected data were then analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods. The findings indicate that Japan's demographic crisis is a consequence of the deep-rooted influence of individualism, personal freedom, gender equality, and the declining role of the state in regulating women's reproductive responsibilities, alongside other contributing factors such as the high cost of raising children. These developments stem from the influence of Western culture since the Meiji era, which has blended with local cultural norms concerning marriage and women's reproductive roles, resulting in the complex dynamics of modern Japanese society. Keywords: Japanese Demographic Crisis, Western Culture, Liberal Feminism, Postcolonialism.
