Abstract

This study is conducted by analyzing the types of interrogative utterances, types of modulation translation techniques, as well as the most often used modulation technique to translate the interrogative utterances. The research method used in this study is qualitative. This study takes data from The Devil Wears Prada movie using modulation theory from Vinay & Darbelnet (1995) and interrogative theory from Greenbaum & Nelson (2009). With the result of the study, 204 interrogative utterances were found, with each type having a total of 77 wh-questions, 64 yes-no questions, 24 declarative questions, 19 tag questions, 18 rhetorical questions, and 2 alternative questions. In the 204 interrogative utterances, 38 of them used the modulation translation technique. Of these, 16 are obligatory modulation, while 22 are free modulation. Free modulation includes various types: 5 negation of the opposite, 4 abstract for concrete, 4 reversal of terms, 4 explicative modulation, 3 one part for another, and 2 part of the whole. Based on the results, the writer proposes the following suggestions: faculty can provide a workshop for students to give a thorough understanding of the different types of interrogative utterances, types of modulation techniques and their applications, also readers can apply and use this study as a basis for further research. Key words: interrogative utterances, modulation translation techniques / Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menganalisis jenis-jenis ujaran interogatif, jenis- jenis teknik penerjemahan modulasi, serta teknik modulasi yang paling sering digunakan untuk menerjemahkan ujaran interogatif. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif. Penelitian ini mengambil data dari film The Devil Wears Prada dengan menggunakan teori modulasi dari Vinay & Darbelnet (1995) dan teori interogatif dari Greenbaum & Nelson (2009). Dengan hasil penelitian, ditemukan 204 ujaran interogatif, dengan masing-masing jenis memiliki total 77 pertanyaan-wh, 64 pertanyaan ya-tidak, 24 pertanyaan deklaratif, 19 pertanyaan penanda, 18 pertanyaan retorik, dan 2 pertanyaan alternatif. Dari 204 ujaran interogatif, 38 di antaranya menggunakan teknik penerjemahan modulasi. Dari jumlah tersebut, 16 di antaranya merupakan modulasi wajib, sedangkan 22 lainnya merupakan modulasi bebas. Modulasi bebas tersebut meliputi berbagai jenis: 5 negasi kebalikan, 4 abstrak untuk konkret, 4 pembalikan istilah, 4 modulasi eksplikatif, 3 satu bagian untuk bagian lainnya, dan 2 bagian untuk keseluruhan. Berdasarkan hasil, penulis mengajukan saran sebagai berikut: fakultas dapat memberikan lokakarya bagi mahasiswa untuk memberikan pemahaman yang menyeluruh tentang berbagai jenis ujaran interogatif, jenis-jenis teknik modulasi dan aplikasinya, serta pembaca dapat mengaplikasikan dan menggunakan penelitian ini sebagai dasar untuk penelitian lebih lanjut.
