Abstract

Novel ini menceritakan tentang hubungan rumit Ibu dengan anak perempuannya, yang dipenuhi luka masa lalu. Seorang anak Perempuan merawat Ibunya yang mulai pikun, sambil bergulat dengan luka dan kemarahan karena masa kecil yang diabaikan. Novel ini mengeksplorasi tema-tema seperti hubungan ibu dan anak yang rumit, ingatan dan pelupa, luka dan trauma antargenerasi, identitas dan pencarian jati diri. Akhir dari novel ini menggambarkan perasaan terasing dan konflik batin dalam hubungan Ibu dan anak, serta siklus emosional yang tak kunjung usai. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana trauma emosional dan luka psikologis diwariskan dari ibu kepada anak dalam novel Burnt Sugar, serta dampaknya terhadap hubungan Ibu dan anak. Penelitian ini mengunakan teori Postmemory and Inherited trauma dari Marianne Hirsch dan Feminist perspective on motherhood and trauma dari Adrienne Rich. Data penelitian yang diambil oleh penulis adalah narasi dan dialog yang menggambarkan hubungan rumit Antara dan Tara, juga rasa trauma yang dialami Antara. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah penulis menemukan bahwa trauma antargenerasi dalam Burnt Sugar diwariskan melalui pola pengabaian emosional dan peran Ibu yang tidak stabil. Tokoh Antara mengalami krisis identitas dan kesulitan membangun hubungan sehat karena luka masa kecil yang diturunkan ibunya, Tara. Meskipun ada keinginan untuk berdamai, trauma masa lalu terus memengaruhi keputusan, emosi, dan persepsi Antara terhadap diri sendiri dan Ibunya, sehingga menciptakan siklus luka yang terus berulang. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi studi trauma dalam sastra dengan menyoroti dampak memori, narasi, dan hubungan keluarga terhadap transmisi luka psikologis antargenerasi. A daughter takes care of her mother, who is beginning to suffer from memory loss, while struggling with pain and anger over a neglected childhood. The novel explores themes such as the complexity of mother-daughter relationships, memory and forgetfulness, intergenerational trauma, identity, and the search for self. The novel’s ending reflects feelings of alienation and internal conflict within the mother-daughter relationship, as well as an ongoing emotional cycle. This study aims to analyze how emotional trauma and psychological wounds are passed down from mother to daughter in Burnt Sugar, and how these affect their relationship. This study applies Marianne Hirsch’s theory of post-memory and inherited trauma, along with Adrienne Rich’s feminist perspective on motherhood and trauma. The research data used by the author includes narrative and dialogue that portray the complex relationship between Antara and Tara, as well as Antara’s experience of trauma. The findings show that generational trauma in Burnt Sugar is passed down through patterns of emotional neglect and an unstable maternal role. The character Antara experiences an identity crisis and struggles to form healthy relationships due to the childhood wounds inflicted by her mother, Tara. Although there is a desire for reconciliation, past trauma continues to influence Antara’s decisions, emotions, and perception of herself and her mother, creating a recurring cycle of pain. This paper contributes to literary trauma studies by highlighting the impact of memory, narrative and family relationship on the transmission of generational psychological wounds.
