Abstract
The main objective of this study was to investigate the undergraduate students’ perception on the use of Storytelling in speaking classes at English Teaching Study Program, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Christian University of Indonesia. This study used survey method, which used the explanatory mixed method design. It involved 31 students as respondents, which were randomly selected. In order to meet the objective, the quantitative data. The quantitative data were collected using 5-likert scaled questionnaire were collected. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were collected using open-ended questions and analysed descriptively. The data were analysed using Microsoft Excel 2013, the result of data analysis shows the highest response mean score was “agreed” (55.65%). Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the majority of student agreed toward the use of storytelling in speaking classes; and they also agreed that storytelling also improved their speaking skills and was useful to improve their English language skills and language elements. Keywords: Storytelling, Speaking Class, and Perception Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki persepsi mahasiswa penggunaan mendongeng dalam kelas berbicara di Program Studi Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Kristen Indonesia. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survei, yang menggunakan desain metode campuran eksplanatif. Penelitian ini melibatkan 31 siswa sebagai responden yang dipilih secara acak. Untuk memenuhi tujuan data kuantitatif. Data kuantitatif dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner skala 5-likert yang dikumpulkan. Sementara itu, data kualitatif dikumpulkan menggunakan pertanyaan terbuka dan dianalisis secara deskriptif. Data dianalisis menggunakan Microsoft Excel 2013, hasil analisis data menunjukkan skor rata-rata respon tertinggi adalah “setuju” (55,65%). Berdasarkan analisis data, dapat disimpulkan bahwa mayoritas siswa setuju terhadap penggunaan storytelling di kelas berbicara; dan mereka juga setuju bahwa mendongeng juga meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara mereka dan berguna untuk meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris dan elemen bahasa mereka.
