Abstract

Memoar Crying in H Mart bercerita tentang bagaimana Michelle sebagai karakter utama mengingat kembali ke memori dia melalui makanan Korea. Setelah ibunya meninggal, dia mencoba untuk tetap terhubung dengan ibunya dengan aktivitas yang dia lakukan bersama ibunya yang berhubungan dengan makanan Korea. Beberapa dari aktivitas nya adalah memasak, memakan, mengunjungi, mempersiapkan, dan lain-lain. Selagi mengingat kembali ke memori dia, Michelle juga mencoba untuk tetap terhubung dengan warisan yang ibunya kasih kepada nya, yaitu identitas Korea. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengajukan diskusi penulis bahwa terdapat koneksi antara makanan, memori, dan budaya dalam memoar Crying in H Mart karya Michelle Zauner. Penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisa hubungan antara makanan, memori, dan budaya di dalam memoar ini. Data penelitian yang diambil adalah narasi dan dialog di dalam memoar yang berhubungan dengan diskusi penulis. Penulis juga menggunakan Characters oleh René Wellek and Austin Werren, Characterization oleh Albertine Minderop dan Holistic Culinary oleh Abarca Calls. Hasil dari studi ini adalah Michelle memiliki karakter seperti peka, bertekad, dan giat untuk belajar. Hubungan antara makanan, memori, dan budaya membuat Michelle bisa mengingat kembali ke pengalaman masa lalu nya yang memicu emosi Michelle. Dengan Michelle terhubung kembali ke pengalaman masa lalu nya, membuat dia lebih mengeksplorasi budaya Korea lagi untuk tetap terhubung dengan warisan dari ibunya. / Crying in H Mart memoir tells about how Michelle as the main character was recalling to her memory through Korean food. After her mother died, she tried to keep connected with her mother with the activity that she did with her mother that related to Korean food. Some of the activities were cooking, eating, visiting, preparing, and so on. While reconnecting to her memory, Michelle also tried to keep connected with the heritage that her mother had given to her, which is Korean identity. This study aims to propose the writer’s discussion that there is a connection between food, memory, and culture in Crying in H Mart memoir by Michelle Zauner. The writer uses qualitative methods to analyze the connection between food, memory, and culture in the memoir. The study data taken are narrative and dialogue contained in the memoir that related to the writer’s discussion. The writer also uses Characters by René Wellek and Austin Werren, Albertine Minderop’s Characterization and Abarca Calls’ Holistic Culinary. The result of this study is that Michelle’s characters are sensitive, determined, and eager to learn. The connection of food, memory, and culture makes Michelle to be able to reconnect to her past experience which triggers Michelle’s emotions. The way Michelle reconnected to her past experience makes her to explore the Korean culture even more to also keep connected with the heritage from her mother.
