Abstract
Skripsi ini membahas tentang novel berjudul A Place for Us karya Fatima Farheen Mirza tahun 2018 yang menggambarkan adanya homelessness dan pemberontakan identitas budaya. Novel ini berkisah tentang keluarga Muslim Indian Amerika yang memegang teguh budaya dan agamanya. Para orang tua ingin anaknya tetap bisa memegang teguh agama dan budaya aslinya meski sudah berimigrasi ke Amerika. Ayah mereka sangat tegas dalam mendidik anak-anaknya dan mereka diperintahkan untuk mengikuti dan menjalankan aktivitas keagamaannya, juga membatasi interaksi anak-anaknya dengan teman-teman di sekolah. Amar, tokoh utama, digambarkan sebagai tokoh homelessness dalam novel. Penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisis homelessness dan identitas yang dialami Amar dalam novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori homelessness dari Somerville dan Watson Austerberry. Data penelitian yang diambil penulis berupa narasi dan dialog yang menggambarkan permasalahan identitas berupa homelessness, agama, budaya, bahasa, dan hubungan orang tua-anak. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah penulis menemukan bahwa anak-anak merasa tidak nyaman dengan keluarganya karena ayah mereka tidak memberikan kebebasan untuk menyesuaikan diri dengan identitas baru mereka di Amerika. Ada empat aspek homelessness yang dialami Amar dalam novel tersebut, yaitu aspek fisiologis (kurangnya kenyamanan dan kehangatan), emosional (kurangnya cinta atau kegembiraan), aspek teritorial (kurangnya privasi), dan spiritual (kurangnya harapan atau harapan). sasaran). Selain itu, Amar juga ditampilkan memiliki dua respons saat menghadapi perjuangannya, yaitu melawan aturan sang ayah dan menerima identitas barunya. Kata kunci : homelessness, identitas, hubungan orangtua dan anak. / This study discusses a novel entitled Fatima Farheen Mirza's Novel A Place for Us in 2018 describes the existence of homelessness and cultural identity rebellion. This novel is about an American Indian Muslim family that adheres to their culture and religion tightly. The parents want their children to be able to adhere to their original religion and culture even though they have immigrated to America. Their father is rigorous in educating their children and they are ruled to follow and carry out their religious activities, also limiting the interaction of their children with friends at school. Amar, the main character, is portrayed as a homeless character in the novel. The writer uses qualitative methods to analyze the homelessness and identity experienced by Amar in the novel. This study used the theory of Homelessness from Somerville and Watson Austerberry. The research data taken by the writer are narratives and dialogues that describe identity problems in the form of homelessness, religion, culture, language, and parent-child relationships. The result of this research is the writer finds that children feel uncomfortable with their families because their father doesn’t give them the freedom to adjust to their new identity in America. Four aspects of homelessness are experienced by Amar in the novel, such as physiological (lack of comfort and warmth), emotional (lack of love or joy), territorial aspects (lack of privacy), and spiritual (lack of expectations or goals). In addition, Amar is also shown having two responses while dealing with his struggle, which is fighting against the father’s rules and accepting his new identity.
