Abstract

This research attempts to explain Boygroup Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS)'s resistance to 'toxic masculinity' in Southeast Asia which has become a contradiction in society as a result of patriarchal and capitalist ideologies that place men in a higher and superior position. Deconstruction theory and the concept of 'gentle masculinity' are used to analyze the problem of toxic masculinity that occurs in Southeast Asia and BTS' resistance to toxic masculinity which creates a shift in the meaning of masculinity. This research uses a deconstruction strategy method, namely a textual strategy, multiple reading, and deconstruction which are described qualitatively to explain the existing problems. Based on the data traced, this research found that the K-pop boy group BTS gives a new meaning of masculinity by bringing masculine and feminine characters together to fight the problem of toxic masculinity in Southeast Asia. They succeeded in deconstructing the discourse of masculinity in general by presenting the figure of a 'new man' in society through fans who interpret that masculinity does not always mean stereotypes of men in general. They are formed and presented as strong men with muscular bodies, but on the other hand, they also display feminine visuals and characters. Keywords: Toxic masculinity; BTS; soft masculinity; deconstruction
