Abstract

Tattoo in the Mentawai tribe is called "titi" which has a function as a symbol of non-verbal communication through tattoo motifs inscribed on the people of Mentawai's body. For the Mentawai tribe, tattoo is a symbol of human balance and harmony with the nature, which is full of meaning connected with the ancestral belief of "Arat Sabulungan". The Mentawai tribe considers that traditional Mentawai tattoo is a symbol of ethnic identity that explains ethnic origin or territory, social status in society that shows an indigenous elder or a sikerei’s tattoo is different from a hunter’s tattoo, an expression of art that considers tattoos as eternal clothing that will be taken to death. From this reality, researchers are interested in studying further in a study entitled "The Meaning of Tattoos as a Form of Non-Verbal Communication (Ethnographic Study of Tattoos in the District of South Siberut, Mentawai Islands District)." The theoretical basis used to answer the problem of "why does the Mentawai community use tattoos as a form of non-verbal communication, and how does the Mentawai community interpret tattoos?" is a theory of non-verbal communication, symbolic interaction and ethnographic. The method used is qualitative with an ethnographic approach through observation of participation and interviews with informants (traditional elders and also sikerei). The results of the study revealed that Mentawai people personally used traditional Mentawai tattoos because of their parents' suggestions, given hereditarily in a family life in Mentawai. In general, it is to tell about life experiences, work or profession through a tattoo motif that is inscribed on the body as a symbol or sign, the Mentawai characteristic distinguishes Mentawai people from others. Mentawai traditional tattoos are interpreted as a tribute to nature through a tattoo motif that is inscribed on the body. It is a representation of the natural form, eternal clothing of the Mentawai people who can be brought to death and also interpreted as a symbol of maturity; independence; strength and wisdom.
