Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out what metaphorical expressions which are used and how to translate the metaphorical expressions in Christopher Nolan‟s film Interstellar. The research explains the metaphorical expression and the method to translate it. The explanation shows about metaphorical expression which classifies the metaphor into three parts: Structural Metaphor, Orientational Metaphor, and Ontological Metaphor. The method to translate metaphorical expression uses classification using Semantic feature to either it is Event Proposition or State Proposition, then the words and phrases can be identified the topic, figurative meaning, point of similarity, and non-figurative meaning. The result of this research is Structural Metaphor consists of 38 data, Ontological Metaphor consists of 24 data, and Orientational Metaphor consists of 7 data and the data of Metaphor Translation Concept, such as: Method 1 consists of 36 data, method 2 consists of 14 data, and method 3 consists of 19 data. The conclusion is Structural Metaphor is the most common metaphorical expression which appears in the script of film, and the method 1 is the most common method to translate the metaphor. According to Larson (1988) there are five metaphor translation strategy concepts, they are (1) the metaphor may be kept if the receptor language permits, (2) a metaphor may be translated as a simile, (3) a metaphor of the receptor language which has the same meaning may be substituted, (4) the metaphor may be kept and the meaning explained, and (5) the meaning of the metaphor may be translated without keeping the metaphorical imaginary. However, the researcher only uses three of them, which are (1) the metaphor may be kept if the receptor language permits, (2) a metaphor may be translated as a simile, (3) a metaphor of the receptor language which has the same meaning may be substituted. The researcher, therefore, suggests that other researchers employ the other two remaining metaphor translation strategy concepts: the metaphor may be kept and the meaning explained and the meaning of the metaphor may be translated without keeping the metaphorical imaginary. Keyword: Metaphorical expressions, translation strategy concept, translation analysis.
