Abstract

The researcher chooses “The Subtitling Strategies of Slang Expressions in Movie Subtitles of the Unfinished Business” as the title of this skripsi. The reason this topic is chosen by the researcher is because the researcher thinks that slang expression is interesting and the researcher is also interested in learning more about translation studies especially in subtitling field. This research uses descriptive qualitative methodology as the methodology of research. The researcher analyzes the subtitling strategies and classifies the type of the slang expressions found in the subtitle of UNFINISHED BUSINESS. The purpose of this research is to find out the kinds of subtitling strategies of slang expressions in the movie entitled UNFINISHED BUSINESS. Through translation analysis, this research will help readers to understand why the subtitler uses current strategies in the process of subtitling, why they were chosen. The researcher then classifies type of slang expressions employed in the subtitle. The result of this research is that there are four subtitling strategies applied in the subtitle of UNFINSIHED BUSINESS; they are paraphase, transfer, condensation and expansion. The strategy which frequently occurs in the translation of subtitle in the movie is transfer strategy. There are 18 items of 30 samples in this skripsi. There are 60% of 100% samples using Transfer Strategy to translate the slang expressions in English subtitle into Indonesian subtitle. This research also shows the types of slang expressions found in the subtitle of UNFINISHED BUSINESS; they are fresh and creative, imitative, clipping and flippant. There are 17 of 30 items classified as Fresh and Creative type of slang. This means 56% of samples are classified as Fresh and Creative type of slang expressions. The researcher suggests that other researchers try to analyze Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies to tag not only the translation of slang expressions but the whole sentences or their parts.
