Abstract

This research was a contrastive analysis focusing on the types, functions, markers, similarities and differences of English and Batak Toba imperative sentences. The sources of the data were 1Kings Article 1-22 and 1Raja-Raja 1-22. The researcher applied the documentary technique to collect the data. Based on the results of data analysis on the types of imperative sentences, the researcher found two types, positive and negative forms. Based on the functions, there were seven functions of imperative sentences in English, covering: 1) command; 2) suggestion; 3) invitation; 4) advice; 5) prohibition; 6) request; and 7) compulsion. In Batak Toba imperative sentences, the researcher found eight functions, covering: 1) command; 2) request; 3) invitation; 4) prohibition; 5) advice; 6) compulsion; 7) suggestion; and 8) warning. Based on the markers, there were eighteen markers of imperative sentences in English, covering; „let‟s‟, „let‟s not‟, „shall‟, „you had better‟, „why don‟t you‟, „please‟, „do‟, „will you‟, „would you‟, „can you‟, „could you‟, „would/do you mind‟, „would you like, „won‟t you, „don‟t‟, „don‟t be‟, „no‟, and „must‟. In Batak Toba imperative sentences, the researcher found twelve markers, covering; „ma‟, „jo/jolo‟, „ate‟, „da‟, „tole‟, „santabi‟, „tongka‟, „unang‟, so tung‟, „na so jadi‟, „ingkon‟, and „jaga‟ Based on the research results, it can be concluded that imperative sentences in Batak Toba was more polite than English. The results of the data analysis showed that there were similarities and differences. In addition, the researcher recommend to the teachers teach the rules of imperative in English to Batak Toba learners. Keywords: contrastive analysis, qualitative research, content analysis Penelitian ini adalah analisis perbedaan antara bahasa Inggris dan Batak Toba dari jenis, fungsi, dan penanda dalam kalimat perintah. Sumber data adalah 1Kings Article1-22 dan 1Raja-Raja 1-22. Peneliti menerapkan teknik dokumenter untuk mengumpulkan data. Berdasarkan hasil analisa data jenis kalimat perintah, peneliti menemukan dua jenis, bentuk positif dan negatif. Berdasarkan fungsi ada tujuh fungsi kalimat perintah dalam bahasa Inggris, meliputi: 1) perintah; 2) saran; 3) undangan; 4) nasihat; 5) larangan; 6) permintaan; dan 7) paksaan. Kalimat perintah dalam bahasa Batak Toba, peneliti menemukan delapan fungsi, meliputi: 1) perintah; 2) permintaan; 3) undangan; 4) larangan‟ 5) nasihat; 6) dorongan; 7) saran; dan 8) peringatan. Berdasarkan penanda khusus, ada delapan belas penanda kalimat perintah dalam bahasaInggris, meliputi: „let‟s‟, „let‟s not‟, „shall‟, „you had better‟, „why don‟t you‟, „please‟, „do‟, „will you‟, „would you‟, „can you‟, „could you‟, „would/do you mind‟, „would you like, „won‟t you, „don‟t‟, „don‟t be‟, „no‟, dan„must‟. Dalam kalimat perintah Batak Toba, peneliti menemukan dua belas penanda khusus, meliputi: „ma‟, „jo/jolo‟, „ate‟, „da‟, „tole‟, „santabi‟, „tongka‟, „unang‟, so tung‟, „na so jadi‟, „ingkon‟, dan „jaga‟. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kalimat perintah dalam Batak Toba lebih santun daripada bahasa Inggris. Hasil analisa data menunjukkan bahwa ada persamaan dan perbedaan, selain itu, peneliti merekomendasikan kepada guru untuk mengajar aturan dalam kalimat perintah bahasa Inggris untuk pelajar Batak Toba.
