Abstract

Penelitian ini berfokus pada Pun (Paronomasia) yang diucapkan oleh Phil Dunphy dalam serial komedi situasi Amerika, Modern Family, serta teknik penerjemahan yang digunakan dalam menerjemahkan Pun ke dalam takarir (subtitle). Pun sebagai bentuk permainan kata yang didasarkan pada kesamaan bunyi dan makna, merupakan hal yang unik dan menarik untuk diterjemahkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi tipe Pun dalam bahasa sumber (bahasa Inggris) dan menganalisis teknik terjemahan Puns yang digunakan dalam bahasa target (Bahasa Indonesia). Analisis ini didasarkan pada klasifikasi tipe dan teknik penerjemahan Puns oleh Díaz-Pérez (2008), yang menguraikan tujuh tipe Pun dan sembilan teknik penerjemahan Pun. Metode simak (observasi) dan teknik catat digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Dalam menganalisis data, digunakan metode Intralingual dan Ekstralingual, beserta teknik Hubung Banding Membedakan, dan Hubung Banding Menyamakan Hal Pokok (Mahsun, 2017). Data terdiri atas 26 Pun yang diambil dari episode terpilih Modern Family dimana dialog komedi Phil Dunphy ditampilkan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa tipe Pun yang sering digunakan oleh Phil Dunphy adalah Paronymy Puns sebanyak (38,46%), diikuti oleh Morphological Puns (30,76%), dan Homophony Puns (19,23%). Selain itu, teknik terjemahan yang paling sering diterapkan adalah Pun to No Pun (Selective Translation) (46,15%), diikuti oleh Direct Copy (26,92%) dan Pun to Pun (15,38%). Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah lebih sering memprioritaskan kejelasan, kealamian, dan pemahaman penonton daripada mempertahankan struktur Puns dalam bahasa sumber, terutama ketika Puns melibatkan ekspresi yang terikat budaya atau bentuk bahasa spesifik yang tidak memiliki padanan langsung dalam bahasa sasaran./This research focuses on the type of Phil Dunphy’s puns in the Modern Family and the translation techniques employed in translating the puns in the subtitles. Pun, as a form of wordplay based on sound or meaning similarities, are unique and challenging to translate. This study aims to identify the type of puns found in the source language (English) and analyse the translation techniques applied in the target language (Indonesian). This analysis is based on Díaz-Pérez’s (2008) theory of puns, which outlines seven types of puns and nine translation techniques. The observation method and note-taking technique are used to collect the data. In addition to analysing the data, the Intralingual Referential Method and the Extralingual Referential Method are used, with the Comparative Differentiating Technique and Comparative Matching Technique for Identifying Core Similarities (Mahsun, 2017). The data consists of 26 puns taken from selected episodes of Modern Family, in which Phil Dunphy’s comedic dialogue is featured. The results show that the type of pun that Phil frequently used is Paronymy Puns (38,46%), followed by Morphological Puns (30,76%), and Homophony Puns (19,23%). In addition to translation techniques, the most frequently applied technique was Pun to No Pun (Selective Translation) (46,15%), followed by Direct Copy (26,92%), and Pun to Pun (15,38%). These findings show that the translators often prioritise clarity, naturalness, and audience comprehension over maintaining the structure of the original pun, especially when the pun involves culturally bound expressions or specific language forms that have no direct equivalent in the target language.
