Abstract

Dermatophytes are a group of fungi that can invade keratinized tissue of humans and animals. This group can be grouped into three genera: Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton. Dermatophytes can produce an infection called dermatophytosis. The prevalence of dermatophytosis in Indonesia is 52% of all dermatomycosis. Based on its affinity, dermatophytes are divided into three groups: geophilic, anthropophilic, and zoophilic. Geophilic dermatophytes lives as a saprophytic on keratin rich soil. The aim of this study is to isolate and identify geophilic dermatophytes in soils. The study uses descriptive methods. A total of 30 compost or humus samples were collected from four provinces in Java region (West Java, Jakarta, Banten, Special Region of Yogyakarta). This study uses hair baiting technique for isolation by planting soil in sterile hair. Fungal growth appears on the baits after one to 14 days of incubation at room temperature, then cultured on Saboroud Dextrose Agar (SDA+). Of 30 soil samples, six isolate dermatophytes were isolated from four soil samples. Species that can be identified are four isolate Microsporum gypseum, one isolate Trichophyton rubrum, and one isolate Trichophyton mentagrophytes. M. gypseum is the most isolated species. Keywords :Dematophytes, Soil, Java.
