Abstract
This skripsi examines a portrait of Balinese culture through the translated novel Earth Dance by Oka Rusmini, focusing on the life of Ida Ayu Telaga Pidada, and aims to analyze the portrayal of Balinese culture in the translated novel Earth Dance by Oka Rusmini. The study seeks to understand the various forms of gender inequality that Ida Ayu Telaga Pidada faced in her life and the message about Balinese culture that the author wishes to convey through the novel. The study uses a feminist literary approach and library study to analyze the object of study. The findings suggest that Balinese culture is dominated by patriarchy and caste-based traditions that result in gender inequality, marginalization, subordination, stereotypes, violence, and double burdens for Balinese women like Telaga. The translated novel Earth Dance conveys several messages about Balinese culture, including the prevalence of the caste system and its impact on the lives of Balinese people and the patriarchal nature of Balinese culture, which perpetuates gender inequality and restricts women’s freedoms and opportunities. Keywords: Earth Dance, Balinese culture, caste, patrilineal, gender inequality
