Abstract
Teaching English Vocabulary encompasses teaching strategies to develop and improve students' vocabulary mastery. This experimental study involved seventh-grade students of SMP N [State Junior High School] 49 Jakarta. This study explored whether there was a significant difference in the students' English vocabulary between two groups of students, who were taught using different games--Make-a-match and Manual-text-twist games. This study utilized true�experimental design, specifically pre-test post-test control group design, which participants were 68 students--34 students per group, and selected through a random sampling technique. Data were collected from vocabulary tests and analysed statistically through descriptive and inferential statistics. Mann-Whitney U test was administered to analyse the data in order to determine whether there was a significant difference in vocabulary mastery score between Make�a-match and Manual-text-twist groups. Based on the data analysis, the distributions of the vocabulary scores for Make-a-match and Manual-text-twist groups were not similar. Vocabulary scores for Make-a-match group (mean rank = 43.87) were statistically significantly higher than for Manual-text-twist group (mean rank = 25.13), U = 259.5, z = -3.909, p < .0005. Accordingly, English teachers are recommended to accommodate and optimize the students' English vocabulary mastery by providing them opportunities to explore and adjust their language learning, utilizing exciting learning activities, e.g. making use of make-a-match and manual-text�twist games with pictures or cards, and designing relevant materials to help students learn the language.
