Abstract

Bulb pile, as an alternative, is a part of Franki pile and it has reliable strength to sustain pressure forde as a result of the expansion of the bottom part of the pile. It is necessary to carry out a laboratory test to examine the strength of foundation of a straigth-sided pile. It is necessary to carry out a laboratory test to examine the strength of fouondation of a straight-sided pile and of piles with different bulb diameters using the procedures of Standard Test Method for Pile Under Static Axial Compressive Load (ASTM) D1143-81. This research aims at finding out the effects of the size of bulb diameter on the resulting settlement until the limit of failure. Then, the test results are compared with Vesic formula result, for straight-sided, and with Meyerhof formula results for bulb pile. The experiment shows that as a result of adding the bulb with diameters 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 as long as the diameter of the pile, the bearing capacity of Dr 40%, 55% and 75% will increase. The addition of bulb diameter as much as 50% to the pile diameter will increase the bearing capacity of about 40%. This is quivalent to decrease of soil density of as many as 20 points.
